ABOUT US

The Youth Field Hockey League (YFHL) launched in 2017 for its inaugural season.

The YFHL runs from the weekend after Labour Day in September to late-November. We use the following fields in the Lower Mainland: Crofton House (water-based turf), Wright Field, UBC (water-based turf), Eric Hamber (water based turf) and Mulgrave High School (field turf).

The league’s main object is to offer year-round field hockey competition to the athletes of the Vancouver Lower Mainland.

The focus is on teaching how to implement both technical as tactical skills. The different divisions are based on skills rather than based on age. When athletes play tight games each weekend, they will be challenged to play their best and improve with each game. The YFHL organizes games for the U7-U14 age and skill range.

For the Cypress & Whistler division teams the match scores will be kept up and can be followed at the YFHL website. Every game ends with a ‘shoot out’ to offer an extra opportunity to gain points for the official standings. The winning team of each division will be presented with the YFHL trophy. For the Seymour & Grouse divisions the focus is on learning ‘how to play the game’. The umpires on the field are teachers. They will not only explain the rules of the game, but also give instructions on how to play. With these young athletes we do not keep score and umpires will try to move the game towards a equal or similar competition, so better teams will be challenged and be more accountable for their faults.  YFHL games are played on Saturdays only. Every participating club provides a field and umpires for their home games.

Teams are required to wear proper match uniforms (match shirt, skirts/shorts, and socks).
